Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS)

Mental health and well-being are critical components of leading a fulfilling and productive life. However, many older adults experience depression or loneliness and find it difficult to participate in social activities. PEARLS is an evidence-based coaching program that teaches skills to manage difficult feelings and improve quality of life, empowering individuals with the tools they need to thrive.

PEARLS is free for older adults (age 60+) living in Santa Barbara County. The program offers significant benefits, including improved emotional well-being, reduced symptoms of depression, enhanced problem-solving skills, and increased social engagement.

Key features include:

Personalized Support: PEARLS offers one-on-one coaching sessions, allowing participants to work with trained professionals who provide individualized guidance and support.

Skill Development: Participants will learn practical life skills to navigate challenging situations, manage stress, enhance problem-solving abilities, and develop a more positive outlook on life.

Problem Solving Assistance: Participants are guided in the seven-step process to define and select problems they want to address.

Social and Physical Activation: Increased activity leads to decreased depression. The coach works with participants to increase social and physical activities. Coaches encourage participants to select a pleasant activity that they would enjoy doing outside the sessions.

Accessibility: The program is tailored to the specific needs of older adults and is easily accessible in various community settings, ensuring that as many individuals as possible can benefit from it.

Evidence-Based Approach: PEARLS is rooted in evidence-based practices and has been rigorously tested to ensure its effectiveness in promoting emotional and adaptive resilience in participants.
