School Outreach Mentors
FSA’s Outreach Mentor Program offers short-term, school-based support to youth and parents on all K-8 campuses in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. Mentors provide one-on-one intervention services to and incident services to students. Outreach Mentors also oversee school events such as Red Ribbon Week, Jump Rope for Heart, Pennies for Patients and on campus events such as talent shows, recess programs, student counsel and enrichment activities.
- Provides students with support, education, and advocacy to prevent problems such as antisocial behavior and truancy
- Links students and parents to basic-needs resources
- Organizes educational campaigns and classroom presentations (e.g., Too Good for Drugs and The Bully-Proof Kit) to help students with decision-making and conflict resolution
- Creates mentoring opportunities (e.g., cross-age tutoring and Career Day) to provide students with positive role models
Youth learn to create lasting bonds, increase self-confidence, and improve school attendance.
More than 70% of students who participate in the Outreach Mentor Program show an improvement in behavioral issues.
