Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Barbara County

Big Brothers Big Sisters is recognized as the single most effective prevention-based mentoring program in the United States. At-risk children ages 7-17 are carefully matched with caring adult mentors, who help them reach their full potential through one-to-one relationships built on trust, friendship, consistency, support and guidance. Every year, Family Service Agency’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program helps improve the lives of over 200 youth in Santa Barbara County, many from single-parent, low-income homes. The children we serve are the recipients of positive, evidence-based impacts captured in long standing research. According to 2009 Civic Enterprises and Harris Interactive nationwide studies:

  • 86% of Littles surveyed said that having a Big Brother or Sister they could look up to is very important to helping them achieve their goals,
  • 77% reported doing better in school because of their Bigs,
  • 90% said that having a Big made them feel better about themselves,
  • 90% said that having a Big helped them make belter choices throughout childhood, and
  • 76% said they learned right from wrong from their Big.
